Edison Chen's photos - copyright & ethics

I hope this post will change the course of the current mess Edison Chen and his ex girlfriends are in. They'll one day realise, as I have since I decided to find out, they were just making love.

They weren't breaking any laws like those of the computer shop in Central, Elite, who've stolen the picture files, circulated, uploaded to websites, downloaded and emailed to long lists of 'friends'.

Nor have they failed to do a good job like the police and specifically the vice police commissioner and the police commissioner who said sending the pics between friends was not illegal. Result? Inboxes of 'friends' are flooded with hundreds of photos and people are requesting files and links from 'friends' on websites. Copyright? Thrown to the wind. No, actually Hong Kong has never grasped the concept of copyright. The city is well known for its copies - of LV, Prada, movies - where else in the world would cinemas show anti-filming devices warning trailers to ticket holders? And where else in the world would they ask you before walking into a cinema to open your bag not to check if you have a bomb but a gadget capable of filming?

In sexually conservative, malnourished and ignorant Hong Kong, almost everyone is saying the couples did something dirty. How dirty is love making in the nude and taking pictures of themselves while they're at it? I wonder if Hong Kongers have sex dressed or never ever use their mouth.  Much dirtier is the maliciousness of those computer geeks who think it's a game of intelligence or a tug of war with the police. It's not. There are over 6 women involved, people whose privacy has been violated publicly and who've been humiliated. These women would like to be able to continue to live with some dignity. What good would it do to those geeks if these women's lives are ruined? Nobody seems to remember one of these women is married with a baby.

The general lack of respect and sympathy among Hong Kongers is also shocking. They're definitely lost that humanity to live meaning lives. Most are having a lot of fun watching and gossiping. They've really fogotten how to put themselves in other people's shoes. Maybe they deserve to live such petty lives.

Back to laws. I wonder why the police like to raid, sometimes on its own initiative, fake LV and Gucci shops and toys shops all in the name of intellectual property right but have wrongly focused on the 'indecency' or 'obscenity' of these pictures. If photocopying a book is illegal, why is it ok to circulate and copy these stolen and private photos?
