In Hong Kong's Legislative Council by-election held on 2 Dec, former security secretary Regina Ip lost to former chief secretary Anson Chan. Why? Because Hong Kong people's memory is not as short term as Regina Ip thought. This is what Regina Ip said once upon a time and just before this election that they still remember:
When she was Hong Kong's security secretary till 2003 (when she stepped down): 1. Democrary is not always a good thing. Look at Hitler. 2. I don't think McDonald's workers and taxi drivers understand laws so we don't need so much public consultation on a new bill and can therefore skip one consultation paper (The controversial Article 23 brought 500,000 people, or 1/14 of Hong Kong's population, to the streets)
In the past 2 months while lobbying: 1. Of course I couldn't add 2 dimples to my face now (her rival AC is famous for having a glorious dimpled smile) 2. My edge over AC is my age (57), I'm 10 years x months x days younger than her (she did the maths and remembers the micro details, I don't) 3. My experience with democracy is more real and longer than my rivals. I've lived a few years in democratic countries, x years in the UK, x years in the US. (she was in self imposed exile in the US following her stepping down in 2003) 4. At university in the US, I blended in without a hitch with students in their early 20's. 5. I have my supporters. Look at my Facebook. I've got 400 friends. 6. (in the introduction to candidates) (in the box titled Election Platform) I'm true to myself. Of course RI's selection of certain election campaign supporters / consultants / engineers had some weird effects, eg Allan Zeman, the Jewish businessman who took care of LKF, the drink/vomit lanes; CHING Kai Nam, jailed not too long ago for some money/power crime.
AC's campaign supporters eg barristers Audrey Eu and Alan Leong (voted man of the year by me in 2006) don't give the impression of doing a job, much less for money.
Apart from the 2 ladies, I thought Tandon Lal CHAING (Malaysian Chinese) and HO Loy were pretty good - both made a lot of sense when they spoke. The worst performance came from barrister LEE Wing Kin (so sloppy one wonders why he ever bothered to join in the first place), LING Wai Wan (from Mainland China) (more like there to promote herself, and she badly needs a, just any, hairstyle). Non-Cantonese speaker LAU Yuk Shing (from Mainland China) ... why bother in Cantonese-speaking Hong Kong which is not so Chinese yet.
